    Low Density Graph Codes And Novel Optimization Strategies For Information Transfer Over Impaired Medium

    Effective methods for information transfer over an imperfect medium are of great interest. This thesis addresses the following four topics involving low density graph codes and novel optimization strategies.Firstly, we study the performance of a promising coding technique: low density generator matrix (LDGM) codes. LDGM codes provide satisfying performance while maintaining low encoding and decoding complexities. In the thesis, the performance of LDGM codes is extracted for both majority-rule-based and sum-product iterative decoding algorithms. The ultimate performance of the coding scheme is revealed through distance spectrum analysis. We derive the distance spectral for both LDGM codes and concatenated LDGM codes. The results show that serial-concatenated LDGM codes deliver extremely low error-floors. This work provides valued information for selecting the parameters of LDGM codes. Secondly, we investigate network-coding on relay-assisted wireless multiple access (WMA) networks. Network-coding is an effective way to increase robustness and traffic capacity of networks. Following the framework of network-coding, we introduce new network codes for the WMA networks. The codes are constructed based on sparse graphs, and can explore the diversities available from both the time and space domains. The data integrity from relays could be compromised when the relays are deployed in open areas. For this, we propose a simple but robust security mechanism to verify the data integrity.Thirdly, we study the problem of bandwidth allocation for the transmission of multiple sources of data over a single communication medium. We aim to maximize the overall user satisfaction, and formulate an optimization problem. Using either the logarithmic or exponential form of satisfaction function, we derive closed-form optimal solutions, and show that the optimal bandwidth allocation for each type of data is piecewise linear with respect to the total available bandwidth. Fourthly, we consider the optimization strategy on recovery of target spectrum for filter-array-based spectrometers. We model the spectrophotometric system as a communication system, in which the information content of the target spectrum is passed through distortive filters.     Measuring The Flow Experience Of Players Playing Online Games

    Nowadays, online games have become a highly profitable e-commerce application. Therefore, researchers increasingly believe that understanding online game player behavior is critical to the success of online game practitioners.The factors influencing the flow of online games are of major concern to academic researchers and online games practitioners. Drawing on the theory of flow, this study empirically explores how the interactivity and intrinsic beliefs impact flow experience, and how flow experience is related to replay intention. Then, confirmatory factor analysis is applied to test and the proposed research model is evaluated with partial least squares (SmartPLS 2.0). The results show that flow experience is a significant predictor ofreplay intention. Four antecedents to flow (telepresence, focused attention, skills and challenges) have positive influence on flow experience. Interactivity (social interactivity and human-machine interactivity) and intrinsic beliefs (perceived attractiveness, personal involvement) influence the antecedents of flow experience. Moreover, social interactivity has a stronger impact on the antecedents of flow experience than human-machine interactivity.     Constructing Employability Indicators for Enhancing the Effectiveness of Engineering Education for the Solar Industry

    The aim of this research is to establish a set of employability indicators that capture the competency requirements and performance expectations that solar energy enterprises have of their employees. In the qualitative component of the study, 12 administrators and 32 engineers in the industry were interviewed, and meetings with focus groups were conducted to formulate a questionnaire for a survey of Taiwanese solar energy companies for the confirmation and prioritisation of the employability indicators. On the basis of the results of the quantitative component, an interpretational model relating competence, job performance, working attitude, and employability for solar corporation recruitment and training purposes as well as for school curricular development was developed. The interpretation model formulated effectively interprets the relationship between solar enterprises’ expectations and students’ employability. The research contributes a framework for the selection and cultivation of talent, as well as providing a basis for fundamental development of the solar engineering curriculum

    Is Contract Farming More Profitable and Efficient Than Non-Contract Farming-A Survey Study of Rice Farms In Taiwan

    Trade liberalization and globalization has modernized the food retail sector in Taiwan, affecting consumers, producers and trade patterns. These changes have placed significant pressures on farmers and processors including more stringent quality control and product varieties. The government has launched a rice production-marketing contract program in 2005 to assist rice farmers and the agro-business sector to work together as partners. The minimum scale for each contract is 50 hectares of adjacent rice paddies with 50 participants including rice farmers, seedling providers, millers and marketing agents. In order to evaluate the outcome of this program, a survey is conducted in the summer of 2005 after the first (spring) crop is harvested. Information of price and value of output and major variable and fixed inputs are collected along with characteristics of the farmers and farms. The survey results show that the average revenue of a contract farm is about 11 percent higher than an average non-contract farm. The per hectare cost of production in a contract farm is about 13 percent lower and as a result the average profit margin under contract is more than 50 percent above those without contract. A swtiching regression profit frontier model is adopted to further investigate their efficiency performance. The result indicates that an average contract farms is 20 percent more efficient than an average non-contract farm in a comparable operating environment. The result also suggests that although contract farming has potential to improve the profit of smallholders, it is not a sufficient condition for such improvement.Land Economics/Use,

    The Potential Economic Impact of Avian Flu Pandemic on Taiwan

    This study analyzes the potential consequences of an outbreak of avian influenza (H5N1) on Taiwan¥Šs macro economy and individual industries. Both the Input-Output (IO) Analysis Model and Computable General Equilibrium (CGE) Model are used to simulate the possible damage brought by lowering domestic consumption, export, and labor supply. The simulation results indicates that if the disease is confined within the poultry sector, then the impact on real GDP is around -0.1%~-0.4%. Once it becomes a human-to-human pandemic, the IO analysis suggests that the potential impacts on real GDP would be as much as -4.2%~-5.9% while labor demand would decrease 4.9%~6.4%. In the CGE analysis, which allows for resource mobility and substitutions through price adjustments, the real GDP and labor demand would contract 2.0%~2.4% and 2.2%~2.4%, respectively, and bringing down consumer prices by 3%. As for the individual sector, the outbreak will not only damage the poultry sector and its upstream and downstream industries, but also affect the service sectors including wholesale, retail, trade, air transportation, restaurants, as well as healthcare services.
